AboutThe Grid Lamp was made for the 10 by 10 (10 par 10) design exhibit in Montréal’s Espace Loulou. The exhibit was organized by Séries Parallèles and exhibited in July of 2024.
The exhibition was a curation of pieces that subvert mass manufacturing, although; the approach to doing so was up to the designer.
Construction &amp; Rationale
The Grid Light is made of standard lighting components, spun maple, 3D printed parts (PLA) and magnets.
The contrast between fine hardwood and the 3D printed parts transmit the visual language of a prototype.This was the main mechanism used to communicate the absence of mass manufacturing in the fabrication process of the lamp. Additionally, the main body of the lamp has “witness marks” from being spun, the very bottom of the base has a hexagonal cross section which is how a wooden blank starts out before getting spun into a cylinder.

	Design Process Integration

Co-creation for Strategic planning
A case study of how co-creation is used to develop a strategic plan for the community sector of one of Montreal’s Boroughs

<img width="5101" height="2550" width_o="5101" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/936f1fd87b7e838eb0f3ae79cf826c54ab22ad9c655155d9eb93860cff6d3a71/Screen-Shot-2022-01-07-at-4.41.40-PM-01.png" data-mid="129399142" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/936f1fd87b7e838eb0f3ae79cf826c54ab22ad9c655155d9eb93860cff6d3a71/Screen-Shot-2022-01-07-at-4.41.40-PM-01.png" />
<img width="3300" height="2550" width_o="3300" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9e9ccaed57ce9ecab2d4bea49824ce97e7704d9c04f940b5d849600c6dcd1ce2/Ahuntsic-Territory-01-01.png" data-mid="129399361" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9e9ccaed57ce9ecab2d4bea49824ce97e7704d9c04f940b5d849600c6dcd1ce2/Ahuntsic-Territory-01-01.png" />

	Defining co-creation
Co-creation is an approach to design which considers that stakeholders can provide ongoing value to the design process if we engage them consistently throughout the project and invite them to take a participatory role in key decision making. The benefit of this approach is in the diversity of perspectives and experiences which contribute to in the co-creation activities. To use co-creation in a project, workshops are often designed around the key parts of the project that require critique; in this way, co-creation becomes stakeholder engagement.
Co-creation workshops usually provoke conversations and participation around important topics that correspond to a certain part of a design project where insights, validation and new leads are required.“The co-creation session aims to explore potential directions
and gathers a wide range of perspectives in the process.”Schneider, J., Stickdorn, M., (2012). This is service design thinking: Basics, tools, cases. BIS Publishers.
The information that comes out of co-creation workshops is then synthesized to provide insights that are adjusted considering the scale of the project or that of its parts. The information obtained can be used to better guide the research project so that it is better tailored to the requirements of the stakeholders and of the users.

Relevance
Within the scope of strategic planning withing Solidarité Ahuntsic, the community organization that I was working for at the time, co-creation was utilized to engage stakeholders from multiple community organizations and initiatives as well as community residents, recruiting them to participate in multiple co-creation workshops. These workshops helped define the key issues to be addressed within the community and to collectively orient the&nbsp; objectives. The final plan also reflected language that residents and local organizations were already using and familiar with. After the fact, co-creation can also help with stakeholder buy-in to the final product that is being developed, in this case a strategic plan for the borough of Ahuntsic in Montreal.Integration
The workshops were structured to take roughly 3-4 hours and to define and rework actionable objectives that would be deployed collectively among community organizations with shared missions or projects between 2021 and 2025.Co-creation workshops were included in the planning process as a form of stakeholder engagement. Liliane Salamé-Pichette, the strategic planning lead at Solidarité Ahuntsic, chose to use co-creation within our process because of her familiarity with the effectiveness of the generative tool and its methods. Solidarité Ahuntsic also employed the help of Meilleur Monde, a Montreal-based service design studio, to aid with workshop facilitation and in the synthesis of the session data.ParticipantsMost participants of the co-creation workshops were the leaders of community organizations within the same borough (Ahuntsic). Below is a persona that embodies the most important aspects of the participants in our strategic planning workshops.
<img width="2083" height="2188" width_o="2083" height_o="2188" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/911edbe07a797c11c2e3b2385c58dbc7990eba5e0b423b3331fa961df27bb2c2/Juliana_Persona_Card02.jpg" data-mid="129836872" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/911edbe07a797c11c2e3b2385c58dbc7990eba5e0b423b3331fa961df27bb2c2/Juliana_Persona_Card02.jpg" />
MethodDue to COVID-19 safety measures, the co-creation workshops were held virtually through Miro and Zoom with additional activities on Jamboard.
To clarify some of the language used, the workshop activities were split up by “orientations” which are calls to action for individual identified issues that exist within the borough and by “means” which are the specific actions and projects that are planned to address their congruent issues. The means and orientations that were being defined and refined in this workshop were previously defined in a rougher form and this was an opportunity to further define what the strategic plan would address. The granularity in the structure was also used to make important connections with the organizations that would be involved and those that would be participating or affected in the periphery.

	Meet Queca
This is our user, Queca, who was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 1991 and additionally with Osteoarthritis in 2018. Both conditions cause her to live with low joint mobility and occasional pain.

The two main sites that are affected by her condition are her knees and wrists. When Queca has arthritic flair–ups, she experiences swelling and pain especially on these joints.

For over a decade, Queca used Methotrexate, an immunosuppressant drug, as a treatment for her arthritis. While her use of Methotrexate did reduce the inflammation in her joints it also caused a common side effect known as “gastro-intestinal toxicity” which came to her in the form of severe nausea and abdominal discomfort post treatment.

	In order to avoid taking Methotrexate, Queca adopted a new lifestyle including a special diet and daily physical activity. Queca’s exercise routine included 30 minutes of Tai Chi, three times per week and 45-60 minutes of swimming four to five times per week.
Although Queca has been able to upkeep her physical activity levels for the last two decades her physical state is more delicate at 81 years of age than it once was. For this reason, she has been searching for new ways to exercise.

	According to “Life with Arthritis: a Personal and Public Health Challenge”, a Govenment of Canada report, a common misconception about Arthritis is that&nbsp; “joints with arthritis should be rested”. Meanwhile, healthcare professionals claim that “Too little exercise can cause muscle weakness, pain and stiffness and&nbsp; that people with arthritis should undertake some form of physical activity” to improve upon their joint mobility, strength and cardiovascular fitness.

	“Being physically active has the potential to both
prevent the onset of some types of arthritis and ease
the pain associated with many, if not all, types of
arthritis.”

	Yoga is a form of exercise that Queca has been interested in for many years but she faces a large obstacle to performing exercises that require her to lay down on a mat the ground.

	She is unable to go from standing position to laying on a yoga mat in a painless manner. The deterioration and lack of mobility in her joints don’t allow her to lean on her knees or perform wrist extensions as is commonly necessary to lay down or get up from the ground.Instead, she relies on nearby furniture to to lean on and help her lower herself.

Even though she is able to lower herself in this manner, she is not able to do it in a painless way.

	Bodystorming

For this project I worked with Queca to explore a variety of bodystorming activities to find her specific physical limitations and comfort levels through the exploration of various methods in laying down and standing up.Through this activity, we found that by using her household staircase, Queca was able to lower and elevate herself to and from ground level in a pain–free manner that respects both her strength level and her joint mobility.

	Reflection
At the time of revisiting this project, Queca requested that the stool be somehow foldable so that she could store it whenever not in use. The prototype explores the functionality of the stool and uses birch plywood, pine boards and wooden dowels, these are not the ideal materials for a market-ready model, they have simply been used to construct this first full-scale prototype so that it could be functional. The use of this material selection cause the prototype to be very heavy and difficult to use for someone that may have low mobility. These criteria are taken into account for the next iteration of the project.

This project was initially taken to the concept stage in 2018. The project was then revisited in 2020, once again in collaboration with Queca. This time the stool was prototyped at full scale to arrive to a proof of concept stage. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, it is not possible to user-test using the finished full-scale prototype. This project will be updated once it has been tested and improved upon.

Case Study
SDA Member Agendas
An organization tool for newly elected members of the SDA

	ChallengeTo increase the University of Alberta’s Student Design Association (SDA) member accountability regarding their responsibilities and their working knowledge about how to best make use of their peers for any given project.Methods
Qualitative Research Interviews
Primary ResearchDesign Thinking Project Process
PrototypingOutcomeAn agenda to help members organize themselves by taking notes at meetings, plan with the use of a calendar and familiarize themselves with all of the roles in the SDA to improve the group’s efficiency and accountibility.

	ProcessThe SDA Board Member Booklets were the result of an in-dept three-month project that employed the design thinking human-centered design process.
Goals
Throughout the first steps the project’s goals became to:

Create a portable organization tool for SDA board members.Help SDA board members understand and take ownership of their roles. &nbsp;Catalyse SDA members’ understanding of the student group’s structure.

	EmpathizeThe process to empathize with the SDA’s needs included interviews with every SDA member of the 2018/2019 board as well as past members, past directors, other student groups and student union members, as well as Edmonton-based professionals with experience in group management.
Some of the key insights from the empathize phase of the project include:
Many SDA members don’t have an adequate understanding of the group’s digital communications resources. This makes it difficult for certain members to meet their responsibilities.

The SDA’s transition process occurs when the outgoing team is undergoing academic burnout and is not willing or able to dedicate adequate time to onboarding the incoming team members.

The SDA uses too many streams of communication that don’t allow for efficient transmission of information, especially for less committed members.

Define

	During the define phase the focus was on the first insight from the “empathize” phase of the project, the key insight being:Many SDA members lack engagement with the group’s own shared Google Drive folder system, this is evident from&nbsp; individual members’ lack of knowledge about ongoing projects as well as from in-meeting discussion about how to best organize our Google Drive to promote proactivity.”This insight was chosen because it was seen to have the most potential to create more engagement within the SDA.
	Key term:
Organizational Carrying Capacitycan be defined as the way in which small teams struggle with the task of using new resources or processing sizable amounts of new information.”In learning about organizational carrying capacity I wondered if members were unable to be more proactive because they were overwhelmed by the amount of information that was either stored or incoming to the SDA’s Google Drive file system.Whether this was the case or not, members were not engaging with their roles at the expected levels in accordance with the SDA’s constitution.
︎︎︎
This is how I formed the new research question: “How might we better engage SDA members to be proactive members of the team?”︎︎︎

“How might we better engage SDA members to be proactive members of the team?”

	Ideate
The lack of engagement with digital resources made me question if&nbsp; physical planners would positively influence productivity levels.Physical planners could be required at student group meetings in a way that laptops can’t. These planners could be provided through the SDA at the beginning of the term free of charge. They can also be easily taken anywhere because of their dimensions.

Having a physical tool that can be kept by the group for years to come means that it can be improved upon by each subsequent year if they wish to. The agendas can also be archived for future SDA generations.
	Prototype
The prototype for the SDA board member booklets took into account the areas where members seemed to fall behind in. These were namely:
planning and organizingknowledge of the group structure,&nbsp;knowledge of the organizations’ goals&nbsp;Copies of the prototype were printed and bound for each new member of the SDA. The layout for each section can been seen below:

Reflection

	The scope of this
	project

shifted various times within the academic year and ultimately led to the creation of the SDA Board Member Booklet. This resource for the SDA is a personal tool that members are encouraged to used and recreate tailored to the needs of the team. I believe that, although this agenda was used by the 2019/2020 SDA board, future teams may choose&nbsp; to go paperless or invest more time in training&nbsp;
	the newly elected SDA members to better use the digital filing system on the SDA’s Google Drive. I would also revise the format of the agenda so that members might have more freedom to express their understanding of the group and its goals even further. Later iterations of the agenda should always be created in close collaboration with the team’s graphic design lead.

	Introduction
The concept for the Livewell Campus Archway was the product of a year-long collaboration with LiveWell, a program team functioning under the faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation at the University of Alberta. LiveWell originally sought to promote the increase of outdoor physical activity on the university campus during winter months. During the scoping process of the project it became evident that we needed to create a smaller shift in the campus dweller attitudes towards outdoor winter experience on the University of Alberta grounds.
	<img width="1280" height="853" width_o="1280" height_o="853" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e47dfa4ba45a48e704a4ea2feb1921e74ab1a0cc7f6050664776b8527864f010/ualberta-snowy-path.jpg" data-mid="78663545" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e47dfa4ba45a48e704a4ea2feb1921e74ab1a0cc7f6050664776b8527864f010/ualberta-snowy-path.jpg" />

	ApproachWe used two University of Alberta grounds development strategy documents from the University of Alberta’s Office of the University Architect to shape our project. These were namely:

The&nbsp;89 Avenue Student’s Boulevard Multi-Modal Transportation, Concept Design and Implementation Strategy and;The North Campus Open Space Plan (Section 3, “The Campus Landscape”—Issues and Opportunities and Section 4, “The Future Campus Landscape”
	We used these two documents to, respectively, understand future changes to the University of Alberta’s main southern street (89 Ave) and to choose a justified site for our design concept.
<img width="1076" height="483" width_o="1076" height_o="483" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5584567e157687dd5046663681410e9d8347212fdb9900ab82b6177c750ba3c8/89th-ave-boulevard.png" data-mid="78664099" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5584567e157687dd5046663681410e9d8347212fdb9900ab82b6177c750ba3c8/89th-ave-boulevard.png" />Taken from the 89 Avenue Student’s Boulevard Multi-Modal Transportation, Concept Design and Implementation Strategy

	Main Insights from the 89 Ave StrategyIn the image below, “Area C: Tree Lined Students’ Boulevard,” the plan addresses the future development of Celebration Plaza, located at the south end of Main Quad (marked “1” in the diagram below). We assessed Celebration Plaza to be an ideal space to locate our intervention because of this repurposing of space through the removal of the existing Administration Building. This part of the document expresses the interest in “[creating] a new interface with the Quad, anticipating the future removal of the Administration Building” “To create a focal point of social activity by introducing a large seating feature in Celebration Plaza”

The University of Alberta Office of the Architect “[contemplated] the removal of the existing Administration Building. The intent of this space is to create a view corridor at the south end of the space into the Main Quad. The Plaza will act as a central gathering node, and will create a grand entrance into the historic heart of the North Campus from the 114 Street corridor.”

	<img width="2678" height="1032" width_o="2678" height_o="1032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8ca4e6f7516474204f3cfd11c2921343025b2ffbd164b1b8fcd502623a857783/Screen-Shot-2020-07-29-at-3.35.36-PM.png" data-mid="78666782" border="0" alt="The University of Alberta Butterdome, Hanson centre and Wilson Climbing Centre " data-caption="The University of Alberta Butterdome, Hanson centre and Wilson Climbing Centre " src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8ca4e6f7516474204f3cfd11c2921343025b2ffbd164b1b8fcd502623a857783/Screen-Shot-2020-07-29-at-3.35.36-PM.png" />
Diagram of Area ‘C’ taken from the&nbsp;89 Avenue Student’s Boulevard Multi-Modal Transportation, Concept Design and Implementation Strategy.

	Because of our close consideration of this part of the strategy document, we decided to synthesize our original given research question: “How might we promote outdoor physical activity on campus during winter?” into:
	“How might we repurpose outdoor spaces on campus to facilitate positive recreational experiences outdoors in winter?”

	Reframed ObjectivesAfter changing our research question we decided that the following would be our main objectives for the project. These objectives are based on the research that was performed during the first term around placemaking, active transportation, and winter city strategies from northern municipalities.
• Enhance the landscape for all four seasons, particularly the winter months which align with the academic year.• Create pride and ownership of open space for the University and surrounding community.&nbsp;• Create a new interface with Main Quad, anticipating the future removal of the Administration Building.
Create a focal point of social activity by introducing a large seating feature in Celebration Plaza

The North Campus Archway is a structure that provides a well lit, inviting social space. It is a sheltered area that integrates a large transverse pathway. The main structures are open at each end providing a new interface to quad that embraces permeability, allowing campus-dwellers to pass through in any direction they wish. The Archway is divided in two sections, creating a large walkway at its centre.

The interior of the structure is filled with warm yellow light from the pendant light fixtures that flow along the structure’s roof. The lights are also suspended between both halves of the Archway, providing some exterior lighting along the large walkway. The lights remain on while it is dark out and provide the sense of warmth and safety. Since the Archway has large windows along the south-facing side of its structure, the lights can be seen best when entering campus from 114 street or if passing through 89 Avenue on foot.&nbsp;North Facing Side
<img width="1262" height="1102" width_o="1262" height_o="1102" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/088eca03bbec0a45d8b56ea34041326336260dd7de85507e130703e302cb57dd/North-Campus-Archway.3.png" data-mid="79047582" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/088eca03bbec0a45d8b56ea34041326336260dd7de85507e130703e302cb57dd/North-Campus-Archway.3.png" />
On the north-facing side of the Archway, three levels of bleachers project outwards, facing Main Quad. The surfaces of the benches are covered by red cedar panelling, providing a more cold-friendly surface. On each side of the archway, about 25 people are able to sit together on the bleachers, providing space for groups of different numbers to congregate and enjoy the space together.

The Cascade See-Saw<img width="2040" height="1745" width_o="2040" height_o="1745" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b59b803eb817e9d0192b19939527efed444360ec50a451e6cfd5e36608ce77c6/North-Campus-Archway.24_Snow.png" data-mid="79027441" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b59b803eb817e9d0192b19939527efed444360ec50a451e6cfd5e36608ce77c6/North-Campus-Archway.24_Snow.png" />The Cascade See-saw encourages active play and sociability by inviting campus dwellers to sit on each of its ends, and take turns pushing their feet off the ground to lift their side into the air.
The see-saw’s roof not only provides seat coverage from the elements, but is meant to manage snow build-up in an amusing way. The snow cascades off of the roof when the see-saw leans to one side or the other.

The Twilight Bench

<img width="2550" height="2181" width_o="2550" height_o="2181" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b7df4201e7cb6940417cc06c53d0a59ca9ab076d5127bec41e79adbde6e82682/North-Campus-Archway.12.png" data-mid="79027471" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b7df4201e7cb6940417cc06c53d0a59ca9ab076d5127bec41e79adbde6e82682/North-Campus-Archway.12.png" />
<img width="2550" height="2181" width_o="2550" height_o="2181" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c0763f0a1c9e69f575539f8aa4acdf62d7d384b027d3a7392b23436da0dd96eb/North-Campus-Archway.13.png" data-mid="79027466" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c0763f0a1c9e69f575539f8aa4acdf62d7d384b027d3a7392b23436da0dd96eb/North-Campus-Archway.13.png" />
The Twilight Bench is a seating surface made from a concrete base with red cedar paneling along the top seating surface. Cedar is extremely weather resistant and is used in many outdoor applications, allowing the bench to withstand all seasons. The bench mimics the structural curve and wooden beams of the Archway. Segments of the bench are sectioned by wooden extrusions which house the light source.

	Reflection
This project married months of research on placemaking, active play, and winter-city strategy with the knowledge and constraints presented by the University of Alberta’s 89 Avenue Student’s Boulevard Multi-Modal Transportation, Concept Design and Implementation Strategy and the&nbsp;North Campus Open Space Plan. Although it was not chosen as the model for future development of LiveWell’s goal it was a phenomenal opportunity to learn about designing within a development strategy for an organization as large and complex as the University of Alberta.

“Open spaces serve a range of functions for campus users – areas to gather, recreate, rest, converse, or for quiet contemplation...&nbsp; Linkages between spaces and proper integration with surrounding buildings are critical to their success.”
